Understanding the Claims Process
Accidents are no fun, but they can happen to anyone. Luckily, carrying the proper auto insurance with comprehensive and collision coverage will protect you financially in the event of a mishap. If you get into an accident, here are some steps you should follow.
The first thing to prioritize in a car accident is your safety. You may be tempted to run out of the car and assess the damage quickly, but doing so could put you at risk of being injured by oncoming traffic or additional hazards. Be sure to be aware of your surroundings before exiting your car.
If there are any signs of injury or the other party is attempting to flee the accident scene, call 911 immediately. If there are no injuries, contact the local police department or highway patrol, regardless of how minor the damage is. Having a police report to complement your insurance claim is critical. A police report will provide detailed documentation of the accident and help your insurance company determine who is at fault.
After contacting authorities, your next step should be to gather all relevant information for your auto insurance claim. You should collect the following information from all drivers involved:
- Driver's contact information
- Driver's license and auto insurance information
- Make and model of all cars involved
- License plate numbers of all vehicles involved
If any witnesses can provide additional information, be sure to get their contact information as well. If a copy of the police report isn't provided at the scene, obtain the officer's name and badge number to make it easier to get a copy of the police report later.
After an accident, you should take plenty of photos of the scene to help build your case. Be sure to take pictures of all damage caused to any vehicles or property. Remember to share these photos with your claim representative to help determine who is at fault and to confirm all related damages.
Once you have all the information together, have taken plenty of photos, and have spoken to the police, contact your insurance provider to file a claim as soon as possible. Depending on your provider, you may be able to file a claim directly through your insurer's app or website.
